The BAE Harrier II GR9 serves as an upgraded version of the Harrier II, first developed by British Aerospace in 1989. The base model Harrier II serves as a vertical/short takeoff and landing jet aircraft that has been used in operations in Iraq, Kosovo, and Afghanistan. The series of aircraft were designed to excel in air interdiction and close air support, also performing well for presence projection and reconnaissance operations. Over the years, various variants of the Harrier II have been developed, ranging from the GR5 to the T.12A.
The GR9 variant of the BAE Harrier II was developed as an upgrade to the GR7 with improved avionics and weapons. The BAE Harrier II GR9 features a Rolls-Royce Pegasus Mk.107 turbofan engine configuration, capable of generating 24,750 pounds of force to fly at a max cruise speed of 357 knots. The GR9 can carry a payload of up to 3,651 lbs, and its fuel economy averages at 1.81 nautical miles per gallon. For ordinance, the GR9 may be fitted with general-purpose bombs, anti-tank missiles, air-to-air missiles, guided bombs, and more.
