Tiltrotor Models - Part Listing

Tiltrotor aircraft refer to those that generate lift through the use of one or more rotors at the ends of wings or mounted upon the fuselage. Tiltrotors are capable of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), utilizing rotating propellers or ducted fans to transform vertical flight to horizontal flight. Tiltrotors are often engineered for a variety of applications such as military transport, commuting, UAV scouting, reconnaissance, and more. There are a number of tiltrotor aircraft that are available and in development, some notable models being the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey, AgustaWestland AW609, and Bell V-280 Valor.

The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is a military transport tiltrotor that is capable of both VTOL and STOL flight. Due to its design, it is capable of featuring the functionality of a helicopter, all while achieving the cruise performance and speed of a turboprop aircraft. Designed and produced by Bell Helicopter and Boeing Helicopters, over 200 units have been produced since 1988. Current users of the V-22 Osprey include the United States Marine Corps, United States Air Force, United States Navy, and Japan Ground Self-Defense Force.

The Bell V-280 Valor is a tiltrotor aircraft that is currently in development and flight testing. The Valor is a joint effort by Bell and Lockheed Martin as a part of the United States Army’s Future Vertical Lift program. With its design, the V-280 Valor is capable of reaching cruise speeds of 280 knots and can travel upwards of 2,100 nautical miles. The V-280 is described by Bell to be used for military applications only, and it has an effective combat range of 500 to 800 nautical miles.

The AgustaWestland AW609 is another VTOL tiltrotor aircraft that is currently under development and flight testing. Designed similarly to the V-22 Osprey, the AW609 is intended to be a transportation aircraft, particularly aimed at the corporate market. The AW609 is designed to have the versatility of a helicopter, all while performing at speeds that exceed conventional rotorcraft. For flight, the AW609 is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 275 knots, and it may carry up to 9 passengers at a given time.
