Frontier Airlines Places $1.3B Order for 12 Airbus A320 Family Aircraft

The ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines is set to purchase 12 Airbus A320 family aircraft. Worth an approximate $1.3 billion, the deal includes ten A321 and two A320 airliners which will be used to replace Frontier Airlines’ larger variants while phasing out the Airbus A319 aircraft.

First CFM Leap-1A-Powered Airbus A320 Makes Maiden Flight

In May 2015, Airbus completed the maiden flight of its A320neo equipped with CFM International's Leap-1A engines in Toulouse, France. During the flight, which lasted 4 hours and 25 minutes, the company evaluated the A320neo's airspeed and load factor capabilities at up to 39,000ft and engine speed variation. The aircraft was flown by experimental test pilots Philippe Perrin and Malcolm Ridley.

Dubai Aerospace Enterprise Looks to Sell StandardAero for $1.8 Billion

According to Reuters, the aircraft leasing firm Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) is in negotiations with Moelis investment bank to sell its StandardAero aviation services unit for USD$1.8 billion. The auction process is expected to start later this year according to Reuter’s sources. DAE, StandardAero, and Moelis all declined to comment and because the negotiations are not public, the sources asked to remain anonymous.

UTC Contracted to Provide Composite Components for Block IV Virginia-Class Subs

SWISS Finalizes $990M Deal for Three Boeing 777-300ER Aircraft

In a joint venture between Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) and Boeing, a $990 million order was placed for three 777-300ERs. Known as an extended range aircraft, the 777-300ER is a twin-aisle aircraft with fuel and cost-effective capabilities. It can hold a total of 386 passengers and travel up to 7,825 nautical miles on a non-stop route. This is following another order between the two companies for six of these aircraft in 2013.

NASA Tests Controversial EmDrive Propulsion

Invented by Roger Shawyer, the EmDrive is a theoretical propulsion system that supposedly could propel objects to near-relativistic speeds. However, the system is being met with much skepticism as it seems to clearly violate the laws of physics. Shawyer explains that it works by repeatedly bouncing microwaves back and forth in a chamber with the idea of creating a propellant-less thruster that can move a spacecraft at extraordinary speeds if enough pressure is applied. He claims that it could gain 3 tons of thrust with 1 kilowatt of power input by essentially moving the particles around the chamber of the thruster in a vacuum.
