The McDonnell Douglas MD-81 is a narrow-body jet airliner designed and manufactured by McDonnell Douglas, and it belongs to the MD-80 series of aircraft. As the first production model of the MD-80 series, the MD-81 slightly differs from its variants in regards to its engine, fuel capacity, and weight. The MD-80 series of aircraft was produced over the years between 1979 and 1999 by McDonnell Douglas and later Boeing Commercial Airplanes, and 1,191 units were produced in total. While production of the series has been completed, a number of units are still in active service under operators such as LASER Airlines, Aeronaves TSM, World Atlantic Airlines, and Bulgarian Air Charter.
