As compared to earlier models, the MD 520N brought various revolutionary advancements to design of the series. Steering away from conventional anti-torque tail rotors, the MD 520N implemented a Hughes/McDonnell-Douglas-developed NOTAR system. Exposed tail rotor blades were also removed, furthering the protection of nearby individuals from harm. The MD 520 is fitted with a single Allison 250-C20R turboshaft engine, capable of producing 420 horsepower to travel at a maximum cruise speed of 135 knots. The fuel tank capacity of the aircraft is also 64 gallons, permitting a travel range of 232 nautical miles with an average fuel economy of 4.16 nautical miles per gallon.
